When Steve jobs presented the much-anticipated tablet PC , the iPad, in the formal launching of the product, he gave the nod to Amazon for trailblazing and revolutionizing the ebooks industry. It was only a matter of time until he took an ominous tone that seemed to threaten to burn Kindle, for good. In Stevie Jobs ‘ words, ” We are going to stand on their shoulders and go a little further. ” And they have taken e-reading further.
IPad isn’t really an e-reader. It is a hybrid that hovers between a smartphone, a laptop, and in some incredible respects, an e-reading device. What it does precisely, nobody can quite pin down. It houses a powerful software that can do anything from playing high definition videos to providing a superb gaming console and, well, everything else in between. E-reading capacities included. At first glance, iPad seems to run away as a winner in many things. But when competing against Amazon’s Kindle, does it even have a chance? The heck it does. Take Steven Jobs ‘ word for it. iPad is a device that can take technologies to much greater heights.
Retailing at $499 per piece, iPad does something more than a $249 Kindle can. It plays all kinds of media very well, it manages Instant Messaging platforms brilliantly, it permits uninterrupted surfing of the web with the updated and better performing Safari, and has other capabilities that are allegedly outside the reach of Amazon’s Kindle
Now the obvious question, will consumers prefer a multi-functioning device that seems to have consolidated everything from smartphone capabilities to plasma TV capabilities – yes ipad enthusiasts go so far as comparing the glossy multitouch screen of iPad to a plasma TV – to a device that only does one thing – to serve as a platform for ebooks? More importantly, when Kindle’s price go up, will consumers still buy it? Reputedly, there are some Kindle die-hard fans out there who appreciate everything Kindle.
Kindle is Amazon’s blockbuster for a good reason. It is quite simply the best e-reading device out there. It does what no other e-reading device out there does – it takes e-reading experience to a pragmatic yet more acceptable level. It’s a no-brainer that kindle isn’t as complicated as iPad and that precisely is the selling point for the machine. It does house any entertainment applications so users can focus on what they are doing, that is to finish the books they are reading from cover to cover. It also has the slow refresh function which makes it hard for readers to jump from one page to another, making it virtually impossible to skip from one chapter of the book to the next.
Kindle is also far less heavier than iPad. It weighs no more than 1. 2 pounds, which is pure convenience for long readers. Compared to iPad which comes at 1. 5 pounds, Kindle does not pose any discomfort identical with users who have tried reading with iPad.
So it’s a standoff… Apple’s iPad has functions that Kindle does not even pretend to have but Amazon offers a specialised device that delivers on its guarantee. In the end, users will still have to decide. Do they need a toy that allows e-reading or an e-reader that does its work very well?

The Amazon Kindle is probably the most well known ebook reading device avaiable today. Amazon has even released statements announcing that the Kindle now outsells paper books on their website. If you’re not yet an owner of a Kindle, and you’re thinking about buying one, there are some things you should consider before purchasing one.
Before we get into the pros and cons, I want to give you a few points that are more neutral. Just about every tech spec on the Kindle isn’t significantly better or worse than any other current ebook reader available. The size and weight of the device are just about the same as other e-readers like the Sony Readers, Nook, Kobo, and BeBook. All of these devices use E-Ink screens, which are easier on the eyes than reading from a back-lit LCD screen, and cuts down on glare and battery drain. The amount of memory storage is similar to just about any other e-reader that you pick up, as is the length of time that the battery lasts. Finally, most e-readers come in WiFi and non-WiFi models, and with or without a 3G capability (for more money). None of these things are unique to the Kindle, but all are great aspects of ebook readers.
Now here is a simple list of pros and cons about the Kindle:
Pros
- The Kindle is currently one of the most inexpensive ebook reading devices, with the newest WiFi model selling at only $139.
- Amazon’s ebook buying and downloading process is pretty easy to use. You can purchase ebooks directly on the Kindle and download them wirelessly. This eliminates the need to download the ebooks to your computer and then transfer to the device, and you don’t have to use any special software.
- The Kindle gives you easy access to many public domain ebooks for free. Some other readers will give you these in bundles, and others will allow you to read them if you find them on your own. With the Kindle you can grab them on Amazon.com just like the paid ebooks.
Cons
- Amazon is very restrictive about the content that you can put on your Kindle. It will only read Kindle ebooks purchased from Amazon.com, in the special .azw format.
- Because of this file format restriction, the Kindle can not use any books from your local library.
- Further to this restriction, the Kindle can not read any ebooks sold at any other ebook websites, unless the files are PDF or Mobipocket with no DRM, which is hard to find because most book publishers require DRM on their ebooks.
As you can see, when you take away all of the aspects that are not unique to the kindle (size, weight, screen, memory, WiFi, etc) there are only a few qualities left that make it different from the other available ebook readers. However, these qualities can significantly affect where and how you purchase your ebooks. My moral of this story is: don’t purchase an electronic gadget just because it carries the most recognizable name — Amazon’s method might be perfect for you, but it might not.
