Is it haram to delete The Koran from my Kindle?
I have just read yet another translation of The Koran, this time as a free ebook on my Amazon Kindle. Admittedly, the original Arabic version (not the inferior modern Arabic version) is more poetic and aesthetically pleasing. However, this book, in whatever form, is still inferior to other ancient works of fiction (such as the works of Homer) and I would like to know whether deleting it from my Kindle is the electronic equivalent of burning a paper copy, and whether the fictional deity of the story is likely to try to burn my ears in retribution.
Although I believe you’re trolling, looking for a way to mock other people’s religious beliefs, I’m going to pretend you want a serious answer, because other people might be interested.
Deleting the version on a Kindle or other ebook reader is not destroying the book any more than turning off a projector is destroying a slideshow. The original digital copy still exists elsewhere. For one acquired from Amazon.com, it’s still in the library; for other places, it exists wherever the download happened. (For that matter, it still exits on the Kindle until that portion of the drive is overwritten in new data; “deleting” a computer file just removes access to it.)
It might be the equivalent of setting the book down in an unattainable place, or allowing it to gradually become worn out from use, as happens with paper copies; it’s not the same as burning a physical copy.
The deity mentioned in the book doesn’t need to burn your ears; it’s obvious your life is pathetic enough without divine intervention.
