How Internet Marketers Can Learn From Fashion
At first glance, it seems like internet marketing and fashion are worlds apart. The only time fashion trends would factor into a marketing campaign would be if you were selling clothes. Fashion can’t have anything to do with the home finance industry, can it? Who cares what your niche market wears when your product has nothing to do with clothes.
Of course, if the product he is selling is clothes, fashion has everything to do with marketing. But that’s about the only niche market that has anything to do with the rag trade, right? What self-respecting young man cares about what he wears? The truth is that we all do. We made throw on a dirty tee shirt and an old leather watch in the morning, but those are the fashion statement we’re making.
Here’s an example: construction workers all wear the same basic ‘style’ of clothing. They wear durable pants and shirts and sturdy boots. Why, though, do workers on one site wear brown boots and those on another wear black? It’s because they are adhering to their peer group’s fashion trend. They are fitting into their respective groups.
A good internet marketer will be aware of everything his niche market wears because he wants to fit in with them so that they will want to fit in with him. The marketer trying to sell a home financing package to people on a construction worker’s pay scale doesn’t want to alienate them on his website. If there’s a photograph of a loan officer shaking the hand of a construction worker who’s wearing his workboots, it gives the worker the feeling that he is one of their own.
One of the toughest markets to succeed in is affiliate marketing. Marketers selling automated traffic generating programs want their customers to feel like they’ve got a unique product that can bust through traffic jams and get to financial freedom. They can say this with words, but images work better. In real life, a black helmet has nothing to do with a computer program, but its image is perfect for the affiliate marketer.
Bikers are rebels who get ahead by being tougher than everybody else. They take a novel approach to life and are envied for their ability to just cruise through traffic jams and take to the open road. Black leather pants, a black tee shirt and black headgear show the world that you got successful thanks to your tough, rebellious software program. The photograph of you on your expensive black and chrome motorcycle proves it!
Clearly, internet marketing and fashion have everything to do with each other. Fashion has its effect on us subliminally, even if we deny its importance consciously. Apply fashion to marketing and see dramatic changes to your success.
