Make this Holiday Season Special With the Right Book
When Christmas rolls around, for many “gift anxiety” sets in. Everyone wants to give a great gift, but the stress to make the right choice can be overwhelming. Especially if your list of gift recipients is long! Gift lists are often dominated by DVDs and expensive electronics, but there is an alternative for those seeking out something quieter and more affordable: books. A book is a gift that has appeal for people of all ages. If you take some time to survey the interests of those on your gift list, you shouldn’t have a problem choosing a book they’ll be sure to enjoy.
If you’re looking for a book for young children, take careful note of the children’s ages. The youngest children are bound to enjoy picture books featuring vibrant colors and imaginative language. The old stand-by classics are bargain buys and widely available. Dr. Seuss books are a perennial favorite, and have a Beginner Book Collection that retailers usually sell at a discount. Eric Carle’s “Very Hungry Caterpillar” series of books is a modern classic.
For middle readers, top choices this year include titles like “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead and “The Last Olympian” by Rick Riordan. These titles, meant for kids who read chapter books, feature stories rich with fantasy and adventure. For teens, this year is the year of the “Twilight” series. Chances are, your teen has already read these books, but if not, they’re sure to want to. If your teen is a Twilight veteran, consider the “Vampire Kisses” series by Ellen Schrieber. Additionally, you could try Melissa de la Cruz’s “Blue Bloods” series.
For adult readers, you must consider personal genre preferences as well as whether the recipient favors fiction or non-fiction. Many readers love mystery, but aren’t so enthralled by romance, for example. By taking note of personalities and personal preferences before heading out to the bookstore, you can make your selection much easier.
Some hot critic picks this year are Tracy Kidder’s “Strength in What Remains” and “Let the Great World Spin” by Colum McCann. Popular author Dan Brown, who wrote the blockbuster “The DaVinci Code” is finally out with his follow-up, “The Lost Symbol.” Not to be outdone, legal thriller master John Grisham released “The Associate” this year. For political junkies, there are choices on either side of the political spectrum. Hot choices are political memoirs by the late Senator Ted Kennedy and Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
There are plenty of options out there, and you’re bound to stumble on the perfect book with a little effort.
