E-Books Officially Selling More Copies Than Paperbacks
The E-Ink revolution is apparently here with the news that Amazon.com is now selling more Kindle eBooks than paperbacks. This month, Amazon sold 115 kindle e-books for every 100 paperback books. Hardbacks, though clearly the superior printed form, are struggling: for every 100 hardbacks sold, 300 Kindle copies will shift. And despite very strong competition from Apple’s iPad (which has a kindle store app), Amazon’s kindle device was purchased 8 million times last year. This is being taken as proof that the sale of E-books isn’t just a passing fad: if two opposing devices are selling, there’s clearly a new and valid way of consuming these products being born. If we Fly Drive Australia or take our merry-selves anywhere on the face of the planet, we’ll always have these little rectangles of electronic joy at our sides. Or will we??
The sales figures for one retailer are not the worldwide picture of course, but they do beg the question whether there is a long term market for non-digital products. But aren’t we putting ourselves behind the tech too quickly? Would these expensive (and electronic) devices really come with us for extended Australia tours? There’s pros and cons either way. Environmentally I adore the kindle. A few less papers wasted on train-station kiosk smut and Andy McNab will make the world a better place. And space saving? Well, a library of books is all very impressive, but sometimes it’s just unneeded.
But a paper book still has a remarkable amount of utility. In fact, considering these are electronic devices we’re talking about, their inflexibility is something of a surprise. Categorically, students cannot work on Kindles. If you’re a hardworking student, you’ll find it a pain in the butt to annotate a Kindle book (if you can at all), or keep key points at manual reach. If you’re a proper student, you won’t be able to afford a kindle in the first place. But most critical of all, books just mix with certain environments a lot better. You’re not going to have a kindle with you by the poolside as you cruise Australia? Damage assessment with a paper book: a pile of black and white goo and a net loss of five pounds. With a kindle? At least one hundred pounds down the drain.
