Cormac McCarthy’s The Road
Not every book makes a great movie; this is a fact about books that cannot be swept under the cover. It is a fact that readers live with every day. It is hard to see your favorite book turned into a movie. Because invariably the movie never lives up to the images you have created in your mind. There are always artistic differences set forth by the director that takes the movie in a different direction than the book. Very few have made a successful transfer from print to film. The Road by Cormac McCarthy faces this very same dilemma.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy is set in a post-apocalyptic world where people have become the most precious resource on earth. A disaster has wiped out most of the population along with many of the creature comforts, such as food and clean water. It has forced a man with his young son to adopt a “Me, Me” persona in order to survive against cannibalistic hordes and other disasters that await at every turn.
The Road has really received mixed reviews. McCarthy’s other work, No Country for Old Men, did receive much higher praise from readers and viewers when it was made into a movie. The reviews for The Road have been really mixed. Critics have found it very cutting edge and thrilling but readers have often commented that the novel was hastily cobbled together. How hasty? Many people found the lack of punctuation and grammar to be greatly disturbing and it interfered with their ability to really enjoy the story being spun. Yet the people who did enjoy it, loved it with great enthusiasm. They enjoyed the bleakness of the novel and the struggle being presented of a man just trying to survive with his young son.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy may be a hard book to pass up, especially for those who enjoy dooms day stories. His characters do have flaws but that just makes them more human and far easier to relate to than someone who has an iron will. With the book on Kindle, it is extremely affordable and is definitely worth the price to download and read. Sure, the movie may be better and the book may not be to your liking but at least you have taken the chance.
