The Lovely Bones: A Great Story
Great novels accomplish several things. The novel takes you on a journey. It has a protagonist that you can somehow relate to and familiarize yourself with. It also has to come to a resolution. Those three things are just three of the most basic requirements. A great novel elicits emotion from you. That is what separates a good book from a truly excellent one. Alice Sebold takes you through the emotional wringer with her book, The Lovely Bones.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is not unique in having a child die. There have been countless books that tackle that subject. And that is not a spoiler. You know that much from reading the dust cover or description about the book. No, the real story is one about living and how to go on. It is a story about families dealing with a tragic loss and how they each, individually, must cope with what happened.
The concept that Sebold tries to bring to life in the pages of the book is not a new one. There have been countless stories about death and what happens when a person dies. Readers have commented on this religiously. For some the story had a very deep meaning and was comforting to them. One reader who reviewed the novel found solace in her own devastating loss of her son. Others, however, found the writing to be superb up until the end. It is the end that they felt could have been done in a far greater way.
Whether or not Sebold snares your emotions and puts them through the proverbial wringer is all dependent on what you expect to take away from the book. If you are expecting a murder mystery then you definitely do not need to read this book. The story is ultimately not about retribution or sleuthing to solve a murder. It is about something far deeper than could ever be explained here without spoiling the book’s ending.
The Lovely Bones has already been made into a major motion picture. Whether you should read the book first or see the movie first is all up to you. The one thing you should keep in mind when doing either is that the book is not what you are expecting unless you have already been briefed on how it unfolds. If you have not, then go ahead and snag a copy of the book on Kindle and read it before you buy your tickets. That way you can discover whether or not Sebold truly does have the ability to bring this story to life.
