Can Amazon’s Kindle 2 work in India
There will not be Whispernet (the free internet network of the Kindle) outside the US, because Whispernet is supported in the US by Sprint and it only provides service within US.
However, all functions other than Whispernet will work. You can still download books or newspapers with a computer that has internet access, then synchronize it to the Kindle. There is a very good discussion here about how to use the Kindle outside US:
