Why do publishers sometime disable Text-to-Speech on Kindle?
For some books on Kindle, Text-to-Speech is disabled because of the publisher’s decision. Why do they do this? I know you could say, Well, the Text-to-Speech function on the Kindle will eliminate the whole audiobook industry, but this isn’t true at all.
Amazon owns Audible, the most well-known distributor of audiobooks, which is online. Eventually, and probably closer than we think, eBooks will become just as, if not more, popular as printed books. So when most literature is on ereaders, people aren’t going to buy clunky audiotapes and CD’s anymore, and they definitely won’t want to pay extra money on an audio file (mp3) after they spent money on the book itself.
It just seems silly to me how many publishers are ignoring the benefits of Text-to-Speech. Personally, I’m less inclined to buy a book if it doesn’t have this function enabled. Plus, I think it’s ridiculous how it can be shut off by external powers, when I was the one who bought the device and book!
Listening to the book read out by your Kindle: $0
Listening to the book read by a professional voice actor: $20
Boycotting arsehole publishers who think you can’t tell the difference between a robot and a human: Priceless.
