Bob Dylan’s Five Greatest Albums
Many people just think of Bob Dylan’s lyrics when thinking about his long career. This is kind of understandable as his lyrics are incredible and extremely influential but I also think it’s selling his music short. Classic songs without melody are classic poems! By the way, there are books of Bob Dylan’s lyrics which can be purchased for the Kindle Wireless Reading Device.
What follows are my picks for Dylan’s best five LPs. Everyone who wants to be taken seriously as a music fan should listen to each of these LPs because their influence cannot be overstated. You just can’t consider yourself to be knowledgable about popular music without having heard these 5 albums.
Blonde on Blonde (1966) – The pinnacle of Dylan during his folk-rock incarnation of the mid ’60s. The lead track is “Rainy Day Woman…” which is best known for its chorus lyric “Everybody must get stoned.” I think my favorite song from the album is “Visions of Johanna” but really it is filled with classic songs.
Highway 61 Revisited (1965) – This album starts off with Dylan’s biggest hit “Like a Rolling Stone.” My favorite track on the album is probably “Ballad of a Thin Man” which includes the famous “Mr. Jones” character who is referenced in The Beatles “Yer Blues” and The Counting Crows “Mr Jones.”
Bringing It All Back Home (1965) – This is the album where Dylan “went electric.” The first song is “Subterranean Homesick Blues” which many people think is the “first rap song” due to its delivery of the lyrics which is not very melodic but is very rhythmic.
Blood on the Tracks (1975) – This album featuring “Tangled Up In Blue” and “Idiot Wind” was Dylan’s first “comeback” album as it followed a series of albums which were not so well received.
The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963) – This features the early all acoustic Bob Dylan and many fans consider it to be the best of his acoustic albums. It contains some amazing original songs like “Blowin’ In The Wind” and “Masters of War.”
