Kindle DX Reading Device – 5 Ways The Larger DX Differs From The Smaller Kindles
Amazons Kindle DX Reading Device is a big screen e-reader and as you can imagine, cost more money. So, if you are in the market for an e-reader, what benefits do you gain from the larger DX?
Most of the features offered in the smaller model Kindles, such as E-Ink Screen Technology, big book storage (up to 3,500 books), Whispersync and PDF Support, are also standard issue with the Kindle DX.
When compared side by side, here are 5 ways the DX is different:
1:- Bigger Physical Size
The larger physical size of the DX makes it necessary for it to be held and operated with 2 hands. The dimensions are: 10.4 inches high, 0.38 inches thick and 7.2 inches wide.
A big selling point for the smaller Kindles is that fact that they will fit snugly into one hand and feel very much as if the user was holding an ordinary paper-back book. There is a trade-off with the DX … swapping comfort for a larger screen.
2:- A Much Bigger Screen
This is the big selling point for the Kindle DX.
This model e-reader comes with the large 9.7 inch screen (diagonal measurement) … and is, in fact, over 50 percent larger than Kindles 3G and Wireless models. The obvious benefit for the user is the ability to view much more wording on the screen.
Some users have commented that this makes reading poetry, for example, much easier because with the smaller models, the lines are often cut in the wrong places making it difficult for the reader to get the feel of what the poet is saying.
For those who want to view a much wider selection of material such as maps, websites, and newspapers, the larger display will make this a whole lot easier.
Furthermore, the Kindle DX will allow the user to switch between portrait or landscape making is much easier to view those larger documents such as maps, and graphs etc.
3:- Weight
As you would anticipate, a larger physical size raises the weight. The DX weighs exactly 18.9 ounces.
As a comparison, the DX is 10 ounces heavier than the smaller 3G and Wi-Fi models. In other words, over double the weight.
So, for the majority of users, being able to comfortably hold and operate the DX in one hand, is out of the question.
4:- Battery Life
Obviously, being a much larger e-reader with a larger screen, it will draw more current, which means it will need to be charged more often.
With wireless switched off, the DX will run for 2 to 3 weeks, whereas, with wireless switched on, you’ll need to recharge in about 7 days.
Contrast this to the smaller Kindles, the 3G and the Wi-Fi will run for up to 4 weeks with wireless switched off and, with wireless switched on, up to 10 days for the Kindle 3G and up to 21 days for the Kindle Wireless.
5:- Price
The Kindle DX is at this time selling for $379 … $190 more than the Kindle 3G and $240 more than the Kindle Wireless.
Finally, if the larger physical size, the extra weight and more regular battery charging are worth the benefits gained by having a much larger screen, then the Kindle DX could be worth considering.
