Paper Phone is a smartphone with a flexible screen that you can safely bend. It is thin and takes up little space in your pocket.

Researchers at Queens University in Canada has developed a smart phone prototype made of so-called e-paper that can be controlled by tilting the screen, or as a normal touch screen.
- Flexible iPhone
The phone is called Paper Phone and will be presented at an IT conference in Vancouver in the morning, it goes out of a press release from the university.
The phone is described as a flexible and iPhone can do everything a normal smartphone can, as to save the books, play music or make calls. The screen has a cross section of 9.5 inches and is made of paper thin and flexible material, so called e-ink display.
Head of the project and director of the Queens University Human Media Lab, Dr. Roel Vertegaal, think thin films phones will make today’s smart phones obsolete within five to ten years.
Electronic Ink
– This computer looks and feels like a small piece of interactive media. This is the future, everything will look and feel like in five years, “said Vertegaal.
E-paper display uses the same electronic ink technology used in Amazon Kindle review board, and only a few millimeters thick. The monitor uses no power when not in use.
Paper Phone is a joint project between Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, Arizona State University in the United States, and researchers from the company E-Ink Corporation.

Dr. Vertegaal will unveil his paper computer on May 10 at 2 pm at the Association of Computing Machinery’s CHI 2011 (Computer Human Interaction) conference in Vancouver — the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction. An article on a study of interactive use of bending with flexible thinfilm computers is to be published at this conference, where the group is also demonstrating a thinfilm wristband computer called Snaplet.
The development team included researchers Byron Lahey and Win Burleson of the Motivational Environments Research Group at Arizona State University (ASU), Audrey Girouard and Aneesh Tarun from the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University, Jann Kaminski and Nick Colaneri, director of ASU’s Flexible Display Center, and Seth Bishop and Michael McCreary, the VP R&D of E Ink Corporation.
