Good or Bad, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle Will Have You Thinking
It is considered a great honor to have your book chosen as a selection in the Oprah Book Club, and author David Wroblewski definitely deserves it for his book The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. He decided to put a new spin on the familiar Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet. That is, without a doubt, a task. Shakespeare is timeless and his stories are still avidly read today. So how could Wroblewski put the themes of Hamlet into a new story and still have readers identify with those themes?
The elements of a classic story are pretty simple. You must have a protagonist that readers can identify with, at least on some level. There must be conflict or trouble that must be overcome within the story. And there has to be an antagonist who has the reader seething in anger and displeasure. Wroblewski choose to tackle this by setting his story on a farm that raises dogs. It features all of the essentials that made Hamlet such a classic, which will remain in literary glory for eternity. But many readers felt that Wroblewski fell a bit short.
If you are expecting a happy ending to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, then obviously you have never read Hamlet. Some readers have commented that the story was good but it fell short. They did not like the ending. It is very obvious that those reviewers were not familiar with the tragic Hamlet and his bittersweet revenge. Wroblewski’s story is in the same vein.
David Wroblewski did score a hit by enticing Oprah to include it in her book club suggestions, yet it does seem to have fallen short for some readers. The ratings for the book are all over the board. One reader loved it. One reader rated it with four stars on www.amazon.com and still others gave it lesser stars. Before you decide whether to buy this book for your Kindle you do have the option of downloading a sample of the book. That is really great because you can get a feel for Wroblewski’s writing style.
There are two ways to look at buying The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. The first is that it is a cheap investment. If you buy the Kindle version you are out less than $10.00, which is phenomenally cheap. The second is that it could truly expand your reading experiences. You could search for the similarities in this novel and Hamlet. It may give you a greater appreciation for what the author tried to tackle.
