Mystical alphabet of the Runes – Introduction

The Runic system was used for writing, magick and divination by the Nordic and Germanic tribes in Northern Europe from about the 200 B.C to 17th Century. Mostly runes are known as an alphabet. however before the development of an alphabet, the runes were a magickal system, where every rune represented the forces of the nature. According to Northern European magickal traditions, by calling upon the rune one could establish contact with the force of nature that rune represented.

There are several kinds of runic alphabets, such as Elder Futhark, Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, Younger Futhark, Etruscan Runes, etc. The most common was Germanic or Elder Futhark.

Elder Futhark – It is the oldest version of runic alphabet. the name ‘Futhark’ comes from its first six letters- F (Fehu), U (Uruz), Th (Thurisaz), A (Ansuz), R (Raidho) and K (Kenaz). The alphabet was used by Germanic people in Northern Europe. It contains 24 runes and is divided into three groups or Aetts. Each Aett contains eight runes. First Aett is Freya’s Eight, the second is Hagall’s Eight and the third is Tir’s Eight.

As I mentioned, The Runes were used for divination and Magick. Each rune has its esoteric meaning and each of them represents forces of the nature. Runes have connection to the Norse mythology. According to the legend, Odin hung for nine days from the world tree, Yggdrasil, to gain the knowledge of the runes. Norse people carved runes on almost everything – weapons, houses, etc. They made talismans from the runes.

The aim of this article is to get the basic information about Runes. It is very big topic and includes Northern European mythology and traditions. You will be able to find all of this here. I’ve been interested in Runes more than a year and I’m still studying them. There are no many websites that discuss Esoteric sides of runes. Northern people had shamans in their villages that taught them meanings of the runes orally. Unfortunately today we have no shamans near us. However there are some interesting free Ebooks and I’m gonna publish them on the blog. Thanks for reading
