Looking for a semi-recent novel to discuss with my book club, any suggestions?
I’m part of an informal book club with some friends and next month it will be my turn again to select what novel we’ll read. I’m interested in newer releases (since there will be a lesser chance that one of us has already read it) and something a little different from our past selections. A few of the books we’ve already discussed are:
High Rise by J.G. Ballard
Straight Man by Richard Russo
The Contortionist’s Handbook by Craig Clevenger
Diary by Chuck Palahniuk
Finn: A Novel by Jon Clinch
Since most of us are busy with school, we try to aim for a length of 300 pages or less.
The genre doesn’t matter too much… however, we are not interested in romance, chick-lit, or young adult. If it makes a difference, I’m the only female in the group.
Last but not least, it would be great (but not absolutely necessary) if the book(s) is/are available in the Amazon Kindle store.

I suggest “English, August” by Upamanyu Chatterjee. It was recently released (in the past year) in the United States. It is the story of a young Indian trainee civil servant. The posting starts off as a tremendous culture shock for Agastya, a city boy. However, it eventually becomes one long philosophical journey and a process of self discovery.
Agastya Sen’s sense of dislocation is only compounded by his extreme lack of interest in the bizarre ways of government and administration. while his mind is dominated by marijuana, masturbation and the meditations of Marcus Aurelius,images from his previous profoundly urban life…
It is brilliant because the author is himself a civil servant in India. It gives you a wonderful insight onto an unfamiliar world. Let me know what you decide!
