Learn The Correct Way To Apply For Scholarships!

Students have an easier time finding scholarships these days than they have in the past. College and university studies can get pricey, but scholarships and grants located via financial aid and guidance counselors, library resources and Internet searches can help provide tuition assistance that doesn’t have to be repaid. If you are interested in college scholarships then you should do some more reading.

There are these days more scholarships than there are students entering colleges and universities, according to Terry Wilfong, President of the College Options Foundation. Even so, information from those such as Tennessee university suggests that 1 in 10 to 1 in 15 scholarship applications results in a financial return.

The College Options Foundation is based in Georgia, and part of what the foundation does is helps students to get ready for higher education. Scholarships and grants in a stagnant economy where tuition costs are rising might be a more important means of preparation than they have in the past. Still, scholarships and grants aren’t likely to cover all of a student’s college and university costs, according to a Washington Post article citing information about a new book, “Secrets to Winning a Scholarship,” from Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of the scholarship site, fastweb. There is much more that you can learn about scholarship

Students can find scholarships available from community and civic groups, non-profit foundations, large corporations and government agencies. Scholarships are often awarded based on academic achievements, financial needs or a combination of factors. There are also scholarships designed to increase the representation of certain demographic groups in specific fields. Students who want their scholarship seeking time to be worthwhile might consider some advice from Wilfong, Kantrowitz and others that’s designed to enhance a student’s chances of winning scholarships. Their recommendations include:

Students might consider applying for as many scholarships as which they find that they’re eligible – including small scholarships that, as they’re accumulated, can add up. There are some who say that smaller scholarships, such as those for around $100 or so, might even be less competitive than high dollar awards. Likewise, scholarships that are awarded based even in part on essays can be less competitive. It’s important when applying for scholarships to fill out applications in their entirety. You can find out much more about scholarships for college and use the information to make better choices.

Make sure that essays provide the information that’s requested as part of scholarship applications. Keep essays interesting so that they stand apart from others, and make sure they include solid examples for getting a point across. Students might even be able to draft two or three essays that they can tweak as needed for different applications.

There are typically deadlines involved with scholarship applications, meaning that students have to submit them by a specific date. Allowing enough time in advance could help students avoid mistakes and oversights that might happen when applying at the last minute. What’s more, missing a scholarship’s deadline could eliminate all chances of receiving that scholarship.

Students, before sending in their scholarship applications, might want to review them to ensure correct grammar and spelling and to make sure that no information is missing and that the applications have been signed and dated. Keeping copies of applications is also a good idea, Kantrowitz notes. His book,  “Secrets to Winning a Scholarship,” is available at Amazon.com in digital format for Kindle as well as in print. With help from Katrowitz and others, students might even find that their investments of time in scholarship applications brings with it rewards of the scholarships themselves.
