The Battle Of EReader Giants – Kindle Versus Nook

When performing some good old research on the greatest eReaders available on the market today, two always seem to poo up. Kindle versus Nook, or Amazon versus Barnes & Noble has become a huge battle, but which one can provide us with the best eReader?

Kindle v Nook is quite the battle. Both of them have an awesome 6 inch eInk screen with a clear 600×800 resolution, they both offer heaps of content and will allow you to read books, magazines and blogs. On both models you can choose 3G or WiFi or both and they cost between $140 and $220 dollars, depending on the model, but that is where their sameness end.

When comparing two similar products like this it is necessary to review what sets them apart, not what they both have in common, because ultimately this is what will help us select on what eReader will suit us.

First of all, the weight difference between the two models is rather significant. The Kindle 3 is just 8.7 ounces, whereas the heavier Nook is 12.1 ounces. This is a 30% difference and may not seem like that much, but you will feel it after a while of reading. The lighter Kindle is also far more easy to carry around and it is more suited for reading. Secondly, speed and ease of operation varies significantly between the Kindle and the Nook. The Kindle is much faster and certainly more user friendly, both with page turns and also navigation between the different menus. The capacity of the two batteries is quite similar, but the Kindle will give you one week extra (4 weeks), compared to the Nook with just 3 weeks. In addition, the Kindle comes with twice as much internal memory (4GB) as the Nook (2GB), however if you feel so inclined, with the Nook you can expand to 16 GB via the use of a SD card.

The Nook does support the open-source format ePub, whereas the Kindle 3 does not. This means that when you buy a Kindle you are locked in to buying eBooks through Amazon.com. The ePub format allows you to share books and also borrow books from digital libraries.

If you decide on the Kindle you will be able to enjoy a Read-To-Me feature which means you can convert your eBook into an audio-book. With the push of a button a voice will read your book out loud to you and you can just close your eyes and listen. This great feature is precious for those individuals who commonly get migraines during reading or have have a vision impairment. Personally. I like reading for a little while, but when I get tired I turn on the Read-To-Me feature and listen instead. Unfortunately, the Nook does not have this feature.

So, this brings us to the verdict. The Kindle and the Nook are both fantastic eReaders, but we need to choose a winner. In actual fact, the only feature the Nook has that the Kindle does not have, is support of the ePub format. Everything else the Kindle does better. I guess it is up to you to decide if this feature is alone is adequate to select buying it over the Amazon Kindle. It is possible to use a free and legal program called Calibre to convert between Kindle formats and ePub. This however will not work with copy-write protected books.

I would go for the Kindle any day of the week. It offers the features I believe an eReader should have and it does pretty much everything faster and better than the competition. For more eReader comparisons, check our website.
