So i got a free replacement.
I’m trying to transfer my books from my damaged one to my new one.
I go to my account and it says it has TWO kindles registered (my old one and my new one)
so ii go to my kindle library and click download and transfer, it transfers to my new kindle.
So i click on the book.
and BOOM it says “This item cannot be opened because it is licensed to a different user. Delete the item and download it from your Archived Items or purchase a copy from the kindle store”
I dont want to deregister the damaged one yet because the books i need are on theyre!

Being told the item couldn’t be opened happened to me just recently when I received a replacement for my original Kindle. In my case, I had copied all the books on my old Kindle to my computer, then copied them to the new Kindle. Then I received the message you received and was unable to open them.
If you did the same thing as I, then you have to delete the books from the new Kindle and start over by going to Amazon’s site and sending them from your online book archives to your new Kindle. (Any book which you downloaded from other places for free – like Gutenberg.org or ManyBooks.net – should be usable when transferred from your computer to your new Kindle.)
I did NOT have to deregister the damaged Kindle first, before being able to download and view the books on my new Kindle. I don’t think there was any connection, but I did change the name Amazon used to register the new Kindle. Maybe there was some connection, I really couldn’t say. In any case, Amazon allows multiple devices to be registered under your account, so you really should not have to deregister the one to use the other.
