Flammable Liquid Must Be Identified With Safety Signs
Flammable and combustible fluids are found virtually in any workplace. Proper safety warning signs must be installed to tell people of the possible hazard of fire at any place they are significantly stored.
Flammable liquids are more volatile than combustible ones because they can take lower temperature to ignite. It only requires temperature lower than 100 °F for their vapors, which is open to ignition, to be given off. Meanwhile, it requires temperature higher than 100 °F for the combustible liquids to release vapors.
Gasoline, alcohol, and lacquer thinners are flammable liquids normally stored in the job site, whereas fuel oil, kerosene, and linseed oil are the most common instances for combustible fluid.
Gasoline is the most common of them all. At some workplaces, workers even wash tools and equipment and their hands with gasoline. At one time or another, workers may have splashed a little or may even have finished smoking a cigarette while doing a gasoline replenishment.
It should be noted that it does not need a continuous flame to ignite gasoline. A tiny spark is enough for the fumes to catch fire, therefore, the hazard of irresponsible handling of gasoline.
The following measures, supplementary to adequate work-site signs of safety set up, would be important to warn everybody of the danger of gasoline and other combustible fluids.
- Gasoline and the like flammable substances are very dangerous as they can change from liquid to vapor at very low temperature.
- Adequate ventilation can significantly reduce the hazards as it assists in dispersing gasoline vapors because vapors are inclined to settle down being heavier than air.
- Clothing that has been spilt with gasoline should be taken off and washed immediately. Using clothes spilt with gasoline is a chance for one to become a human torch.
- During replenishment of a tank or container, do not fill up to capacity, particularly during hot season. Gasoline tends to expand and may spill over the tank.
- Properly stock gasoline and similar flammable liquids where their containers can control their vapors. Complement this with appropriate hazard fire safety sign.
- Gasoline is an irritating fluid; thus washing your hands with gasoline is totally ridiculous. Always wash completely hands that had been exposed to gasoline.
With employees following these simple guidelines, this would assist in ensuring that they can return home from work safe.
